Coinneach - "Life In A Scottish Greenhouse"

This is the first CD from this well-known Ross-shire band, brought out independently on their own label.

For many years now they have been entertaining people around the Highlands and building a strong reputatiuon for themselves as live performers with their own interesting style of folk-rock.

Their instrument line-up consists of guitar, fiddle, drums, keyboards, bass and mandola. If you like the music of bands such as the Waterboys, Goats Don't Shave and Oysterband then I think you would be receptive to Coinneach. Although the name is Gaelic (for Kenneth, after a deceased founder member), Coinneach are not a Celtic rock band.

Their material - which is all original - consists of tunes in the Scottish tradition (written by fiddle player Debbie Swanson, and highlighting her technical expertise) and songs in English (written and sung by guitarist Davy Cowan) with exceptionally profound lyrics relating to a wide range of humanitarian issues.

The CD The title track "Life in a Scottish Greenhouse" could well be taken up as an anthem by the anti-nuclear movement!
"How Many Battles" is a beautifully crafted track which addresses the futility of war.
"Energy Rising" asks questions of those who kill in the name of religion and the "Animal Song" analyses modern society.

If this all sounds very profound - which it is! - don't make the mistake of thinking it could be depressing - for it isn't!
It is interesting lively music which makes any audience want to get up and dance. I'm sure we're going to hear a lot more fom them in the future....
