Hello to the beautifull people of Scotland!!! Please, do not stop doing what you're doing. Keep on fighting for your rights, because, although, a lot of people think that there is a United Kingdom, we know that there are different nations with different religions, desires, interests and histories. And this will not change, not even in a million years!! The independence thing is not an utopia, you deserve it as many other nations. Please, we would be very greatful if you could send us some information on scottish history, so that we will be able to complete our investigation about your freedom. Many thanks. Warmest regards, Luciana.

I am enjoying your magazine very much; thank you! My great-great-grandmother, Catriona MacNeill, came from the Isle of Barra (hence the love-name my grandmother gave me.)
I am a Celtic storyteller, specializing in Scottish and Welsh tales, thanks to the heritage from my maternal gramdmother, although I tell tales
from all 6 of the Celtic nations, in addition to stories from other ethnic traditions, family stories, literary tales, and a few of my owm. I'm
also a beginner on the Celtic harp, an FH26 Dusty Strings. My goal is to combine my telling, harping, singing, and poetry, and....take my act on the road.
My husband, John McDowell, is Scots-Irish, and we hope to someday travel to Ireland and Scotland. (I was in England and Scotland for 3 weeks about 12
yrs. ago, and loved it, but didn't have time or money to go to the Hebrides). Here's what I would love to get some information on, if anyone can help me:
harping, telling--and how accessible places in the Highlands are for the physcially handicapped. John is a severe arthritic, and while he uses a cane now
instead of a wheelchair, still his hip-knee flexibility is very limited. He can manage an 8 inch-high step maximum, if it has a good sturdy handrail, and
is not too steep or uneven. For example, he cannot manage the steps onto a bus, and I have doubts about whether he could manage the steps up into a railroad
carriage, since they are very high and narrow risers, and he has to throw his legs out to the side and up. We realize we would probably need to rent a car and
drive, and take ferries, but for example, if we went to Barra, would he be able to get inside places? He will not be lifted or carried (it hurts him), and I want to
go to Barra above all! I can't even recall if there were curb-cuts on sidewalk corners in large cities such as Edinburgh or Glasgow.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Sla\n!

Hi there: I am always interested in learning more about Scottish history generally. Today, in particular, I'm researching Celtic names for a friend's male dog who has a mask like a bandit. Does anyone know any Gaelic words meaning bandit or robber, or anything mysterious? Thanks!

I would agree with other people this site is quite hard to find. I found this site only via a Scottish friend of mine, he told me the web page address to it. Well, anyway I have bookmarked this site now, so it makes it easier to find.
I am American born Chinese, but have many friends who are Scottish as I go to an International School, in fact there are about 6 teacher here in my school who are Scottish and only one of then probably even knows about the site.
Personally I find this site a very intresting place to find out about Scotland and to find new friends over the internet as well.

I have only just gone on line (sayres@enternet.com.au) as I am

grandparents migrated to Aussie via NZ in about 1922 from Falkirk.
His name was John Simson Buchan Roy.
The mag is great and I will be visiting on a regular basis.

I love this magazine - very interesting. My great Grandfather was Scottish, and his surname was Rodger. I don't know much about his family background but would be interested to hear from anyone with info on this family name around the early 1900s. Hi, when I was in the RAF Marine Branch, I was based at RAF Alness for 4 years ( I left there in '84). This was one of the best times of my life. I have called the Highlands "Home" ever since and it was a pleasure to find this web site. I would like to contact anyone from Alness or Invergordon so they can help me contact some of my old friends. My nickname at the time was "Veggy". I have been trying to find them for some time now.

Hello, I live in Palos Verdes, California and am interested in learning Gaelic. I have discovered that the Gaelic language books at the local library have been checked out, and when I purchased a Gaelic tape at Borders Bookstore, I found that several others had purchased the same tape. Now, how do I find those people? If anyone happens to see this and lives in the South Bay area (LA County), please contact me! It is very hard to learn alone, and not nearly as much fun. Or, if there is someone out there willing to tutor, I would like to hear from you!

Hi, I've only just returned to Australia from your wonderfully,
historic and beautiful country. I have been fortunate enough
to spend three glorious weeks there. My family are from Skye,]
Aberdeen, Inverness and Edinburgh. I grew up on many stories
from my Gran, whom raised me, I was brought up to have a
deep love of my ancestors country, and indeed felt as though
I'd come home when there. I already miss your Scotland, and
am sure I'll be back very soon. I love this web site, everything
is so great. I'll be here alot in the future I'm sure.
Keep up the great work on the best site of Scotland on the WWW.

Hi! I love the Magazine. I am 16 and live in the US
and have always loved Scotland. I have done research reports
on Scotland, I just finished a book report on the Robert
the Bruce trilogy by Nigel Tranter, I have watched Braveheart
many times, I have cassettes of Scottish music and I have a
Scottish flag over my Bed. The odd thing is I have never
been to Scotland and I have no Scottish relatives or
ancestors. This magazine has given me lots of information so
I can learn more about my favorite country. Thanks Mucho!

Hi from Canada! I visited the Highlands in 1982 and in 1992
and love the special beauty there. My grandfather was born
at Leckmelm, south of Ullapool and my grandmother at Elphin,
Sutherland. Does anyone reading this have information they
can share with me about their way of life in those times?
I have researched my ancestors (Campbells of Leckmelm and
McLeods of Elphin) back to about 1800 and am really interested
in how they lived. Thanks for any help!

Thanks ever so much for your wonderful magazine. My wife and I spend many hours reading and down-loading material from your web site. In fact, it is at the top of my favorite places on AOL.
In August of 1995, my wife and I visited Scotland for the first time. Both of us are of Scottish descent and have alwaus dreamed of visiting our ancesteral home, as it were. When we arrived in Glasgow, it took a little getting used to driving on the left-hand side of the road (some of you might say the right, as in correct side), but we mastered it and had a great time.
While there, my wife experienced a spirital awakening. While we were driving from Edinburgh to Aberdeen, Carrol began to sob. When I asked if she were ill or in pain, she said, "No. I'm home at last!" While Scotland may not be the land of our birth, our hearts are there.
Keep up the good work. We'll visit you often.
God Bless,

Just a short note to tell you what a great job you are doing
with Highland Web magazine. Since I've started to receive
the mail list information weekly I visit more often. I also
wanted to let you know and all your readers that I just
completed reading Nigel Tranter's "The Wallace" and it was
just wonderful. I've just started James McKay's book on
William Wallace also and it is very good, too. I highly
recommend both of them. What I would like to see in future
editions of the magazine is a section on guided tours of
Scotland which may be available. Also, the Dunblane memorial
brought tears to my eyes. Keep up the good work.

Highlander Magazine,
I am relatively new to the internet, and upon my first browsing, I located your magazine. I have been very interested in Scotland and Scottish history after reading several books on the country and seeing a few movies.
I first found your site when I was in a Braveheart page, and it took me a long time to find you again. (Not being very good at searches, but getting better.) I have really enjoyed your articles on history, especially Culloden, which I think was a fascinating time.
At the time I found your site, I also somehow found a site for the author, Diana Gabaldon, who has written a series of historical fiction books, with a lot of Scottish history. The site I was in talked about a place called "Craigh na Dun" which was a stone circle something like Stonehenge.
This site had some interesting information on the gaelic language and a mini-gaelic dictionary. I have never been able to find this site again. If anyone out there knows the address of the site or how I can link from this site, I would really, really appreciate hearing from you or the editiors of the magazine.
Thanks for your help!

I absolutely love this website! So glad I found it. I have
had a life-long desire to visit Scotland---especially the
highlands---which I may be able to realize next year ('98).
Your magazine has thrilled me by enabling me to enjoy your
land until such time as I can see it for myself. I would
really enjoy seeing some features about different aspects of
life in the Highlands, i.e. Profiling a day in the life of a
Constable there (I, of course, have a personal interest in
that as I correspond with a Pc there). I would also like to
hear about family life and various other "routine" facets of
Scottish life.
Again, thank you for a wonderful place to visit each week.

The weather of Scotland sounds no different than what we experience here. For example: during the last week of February, one day it was 0-degrees F., the next day it was 55-degrees F. A day later, it was 2-degrees F., and a day later it was 65-degrees F. Snow, then rain, then sunshine, then clouds, then extremely high winds, then sunshine, and on and on.
Simon the cat, who prefers living out side, has his own house with heating pad, no less. One day the pad is on at top heat, then no heat, then top heat, then no heat... this within a 24-hour period. Scotland sounds just like Central New York State.

Hi folks! I was brought to Canada as a toddler by my Scottish immigrant parents. Mom's from Glasgow and Dad is from a small town called Bellshill. Naturally, I've always been fascinated by all things Scottish, especially the history, legend and, of course, the wonderfully unique Scottish humour. If anyone out there can recommend some contemporary Scottish folk music, i.e. female celtic singers (similar to the Irish singer, Enya, perhaps, please let me know. Thanks, June. In the last few months I have really enjoyed the highlander, I am of Scottish
Decent-(My great grandparents were born in Glasgow)recently my 11 year old son
wrote a history paper for a contest using info from your magaine. His paper
called "The Battle of Culloden, the triumph and the tragedy" I think you would
be proud of what he wrote. I play a Celtic harp and play mostly Scottish and Irish
music. Any other harpers out there? Just wanted to let you know that the highlands
are in my soul even if my body isn't. I visited there after I graduated Highschool
twenty years ago and my heart stayed there when my body came back. Blessings!

Great web page lads. Wonderful story about the MacGregors.
But when we visit Scottish/Celtic events, clan Gregor is never represented.
Thanks.

1. Lovely website (but then what else would one expect from Scotland?
2. Good guess, if you would... how many Scots really want independence from England?
3. Perhaps Scotland can play the "Bosnia Card": secede from the UK and directly ask for recognition from the United Nations.
4. How can Americans assist in the cause for independence?

Over the past month (since I got my modem fitted) I have
scoured the web (country by country) to find interesting
sites. I have found quite a few. However it would seem
that the best one of all is right on my own doorstep.
A few minutes reading through the Highlander site convinced
me to put it at the top of my bookmark list. (As the salmon
said to the fly - I'M HOOKED!)
I live in the small east coast village of St. Combs, near
Fraserburgh in Aberdeenshire. A lot of the topics/news in
Highlander is of interest to me.
One of my hobbies when not on an oilrig, is writing Doric
poetry and prose. Doric is the Scots langauge, particular to
the North-East. Are there any of your friends interested in
this? I my first book of poetry was published last year and
is called 'A TAEZALI TIPPENCE'. Taezali is taken from the
name of the Pictish tribe which inhabited the Buchan area a few
thousand years ago.
Hopefully, I will have my home page up and running by then
of the month but I will pleased to have any E-mails on the
Doric or any other Scots related subject.
Keep up the brilliant work.
Aa the best

I got on the internet about 4 hours ago and tried a (I thought) futile search for highland material, you are now my first "favourite". As a Scot living in the middle east (see if you can find Qatar) with a passionate interest in Highland history I suspect you could cost me a lot of money.
P.S. If anyone knows where I can buy a copy of Eric Richard's 2 vol History of the Highland clearances please let me know, I am informed its out of print.

Hallo a' Chairdean!
I love the magazine, especially the Internet Radio feature, and the Gaelic Column, so, you can probably guess what my request is...
For those of us in the US, we're not able to hear Gaelic radio programmes. It would be great if you could put even a small programme in Gaelic on Internet Radio. I am very involved with the Bay Area Scottish Gaelic Learners Association, and can tell you that we have no such resource here in the US (if we did, I'd have found it!!!). It's OK when you're first learning, but after awhile, you get to a point where you really need to hear it spoken normally, not in the way it's done on "learners' tapes."
The magazine is terrific, and I come back to it each week.
Thanks for doing such a great job!

I think that your web-site is amazing! I think that you should advertise with the tourist authority, it would help a lot of
people when they look for ineresting places to go when they visit Scotland.
By the way, your tourist authority is great!! They sent me a ton of posters! Thanks! I hope to visit soon!

Greetings from Canada .....
Congratulations on a very excellent site!
I hope soon to have some of my photographs up on the web, particularly of my 1994 trip to Lewis and the Orkneys to photograph 'Standing Stones' and other monuments there.
In the meantime, there is a startling photograph of a sunrise at Callinish in Lewis [the "Scottish Stonehenge"] to start off one of my pages, which is at "http://www.connect.ab.ca/~scitek21/" and I invite you all to enjoy that one!

Dear Highlander, Fellow Scots and modern-day Jacobities,
I am a direct descendant of a patroit who fled Atholl following the '45. I am also privledged to represent H.R.H. Prince Michael of Albany's interests within the United States. Thank you for your article regarding modern-day Jacobities. Surprisingly, there are many of us around, both within Scotland and in the exiled community around the world. We all must work together to restore Scotland's true national identity. I, like many others, can't even return to live and work in Scotland because of continued English overlordship. Anyone interested in learning more about Prince Michael, Scotland's true link to it's historical monarchy can contact me at :E-mail; casajava@eee.org, or by writing, 73550 29 Palms Hwy., 29 Palms, CA 92277.
Thanks again Highlander! Is Mise le Meas, Scott Stewart
