Mobile cinema for braveheart Highlanders

Braveheart and other blockbuster film fans in remote parts of the Highlands will be able to experience the unique atmosphere of cinema-going, and all they'll have to do is step outside the door, literally.

For the cinema will be coming to them - no matter where they are. It'll be all thanks to a Scottish Film Council/Highlands and Islands Arts Board competition to design a mobile cinema, won by CIRCUS Architects. The cost of the unique cinema-on-wheels, which will serve the outlying communities in the Highlands and Islands, is estimated at around 400,000, half of which is being met by National Lottery money. A great deal of interest is being shown by other bodies that serve similar communities all over Britain.

The trailer will unfold hydraulically to form a 100-seat fully enclosed and air conditioned cinema with full disabled access and very high quality projection and sound systems. It will be constructed from a ready-made trailer frame and have adjustable suspension, allowing the whole structure to be raised and lowered by 300mm to cope with low bridges, ferries and the general terrain it will encounter on its travels.

The partners in CIRCUS are all Edinburgh University-trained architects. The company, based in Clerkenwell, London, has previously designed two trailers for Classic FM Radio and a mobile marketing suite for British Aerospace PLC.
