HAPPY BIRTHDAY HIGHLANDER!

by

Michael Russell
Chief Executive

4th January 1997

Happy Birthday to 'Highlander' from the Scottish National Party.

We were delighted that your 29th issue on 20 July declared your support for Independenceand the Scottish National Party and that since then you have carried a regular weekly columnfrom leading figures in the party and given special attention to our National Conference inInverness and to some of the many news stories that we have generated.

Electronic magazines are the shape of the future and Highlander has been justly praised forits high quality and many exciting technological innovations. You have had numerousawards, but the biggest award of all is the massive and growing number of readers who visityour site week in and week out.

You provide real information about a real country to those whose links with Scotland arestrong and based on emotion and heritage. I am sure that many of those who read yourpages are drawn into a deeper consideration of modern day Scotland and I know for a factthat some of those have gone on to support , and donate to, the SNP. Highlander iscontributing to the future of our country in that way, and doing so with style and wit!

Your series of links to the SNP Web site - itself an award winner - is helpful to yourreaders and to the party. I am glad that we have been able to reciprocate and are alreadyjointly planning some new developments for 1997.

One year on from your launch, you are already a sturdy contributor to Scotland and theworld. May you grow from strength to strength!

Michael Russell is Chief Executive of the SNP and a Director of the Gaelic TV Production company Eala Bhan Ltd.
