Peter Wishart;
Peter Wishart is the keyboard player with Scotland's leading celtic rock band Run Rig. Singer for the band, Donny Munro, last month launched his election campaign to stand for the position of MP for Ross, Cromaty and Skye with the hope that he can win votes as the new Labour MP for the area.
In responce to his fellow musician and friend's political stand, Peter Wishart steps boldly forward in support of the Scottish National Party with the knowledge that it is the only political party in the UK which stands for true independence for Scotland.
Over the years, Runrig have been involved in a number of political and cultural issues, fromthe campaign against the sky-high Skye Bridge tolls to trade union recognition. And it hasbeen my growing belief that Scotland's problems and opportunities can only be dealt withproperly and democratically by an independent Parliament. A major factor in my decision to join the SNP was a recent poll which showed that a clearmajority of young Scots believe in Independence. This demonstrates that young Scots arecommitted to the positive alternative offered by the SNP. People of all ages in Scotland -but particularly the young - have enormous confidence in Scotland's prospects as anindependent nation, and I want to help translate this confidence into SNP votes at theballot box come the election. Young Scots have lost faith in UK politics. What they see is a sleazy Westminster systemheaded by the Tories, and a New Labour opposition which has corrupted its core beliefs andvalues in order to appeal to a 'Middle England' constituency. With the convergence of policies and values of the London-based parties - and the quiteobviously lukewarm approach of New Labour to devolution - it is Independence which isemerging as the big idea in Scotland for the forthcoming election. And young people favourthe big idea for Scotland. Independence is the only real vision being offered by any party in this pre-election period.People are attracted to a positive vision - instead of the seemingly endless negativecampaigning of the London-based parties - which is why I am so confident about the SNP'sprospects in the General Election. I would far rather have Alex Salmond speaking forScotland than John Major or Tony Blair. Peter WishartI officially joined the Scottish National Party this week and look forward to helping theParty campaign for a free and independent Scotland through a new group I launched on Tuesdaycalled 'Youth for Independence'.
